Barry Sapp :

Through dynamic and bold techniques Barry Sapp develops a unique
and appealing atmosphere in his paintings, inviting the viewer to
become an active participant, rather than a passive observer. Western
imagery abounds in Barry's elegant paintings. Hopi dancers, Mexican
markets, and western figures are prominent in his brilliant paintings. His
palette is a broad one creating unique, luminous color schemes to
capture the ambiance and quintessential spirit of his subjects. "I like the
luminosity of watercolor. That attribute distinguishes watercolor from all
other mediums."

Primarily a self-taught artist, the basic fundamentals of painting have
been acquired through study at the University of Arizona, the Tucson Art
Center, Imperial Valley Junior College, and Pima Community College,
where he later taught watercolor. Today Barry imparts that knowledge
to his own students in Tucson. He is a signature member and Past
President of the Southern Arizona Watercolor Guild, and now teaches
painting classes and workshops throughout the southwest and Mexico.

Technically, he has also devised a method of painting watercolors
that does not necessitate glass or plastic in the framing process. "I treat
the watercolor so that it's both UV-resistant and archival." The painting
is then mounted to a stretched canvas or canvas board and finished off
with a frame just as you would an oil or acrylic painting.

A frequent award winner, his work is part of many private and
corporate collections, and has been represented in numerous juried and
invitational exhibitions, including the Mountain Oyster Club Show, the
Western Federation of Watercolor Societies Exhibition, Arizona
Aqueous, and ready...set...D'Art 2006, at the Tucson Museum ofArt.
Barry recently won "Best of Show" for Fiesta Sonora 2007, held at the
Ironwood Gallery of the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum.
